Similarly, the November 1, 1917 Watch Tower declared:
"Hence our dear Pastor, now in glory, is without doubt, manifesting a keen interest in the harvest work, and is permitted by the Lord to exercise some strong influence thereupon."--page 6161, Watchtower Society reprints
This teaching remained in effect until it was repudiated in J.F. Rutherford's 1934 book Jehovah. Rutherford then wrote:
"No one of the temple company will be so foolish as to conclude that some brother (or brethren) at one time amongst them, and who has died and gone to heaven, is now instructing the saints on earth and directing them as to their work." -- page 191
It was during this period -- when Rutherford asserted that the Holy Spirit had ceased to function and that the Lord was supposedly giving him information through other spirits -- that he arrived at the conclusion that prophecies throughout the Bible were written to foretell various events in his life and the lives of his close associates at Watchtower headquarters.
